Liberty – It’s Not Something that Just Is

Do we ever stop to think how many things that we blithely take for granted? But far more than that, do we ever stop to think how things we take for granted that are absolutely vital to our existence? It seems that we have this diminishing and rather ignorant proclivity to do exactly that with far too many things that are in reality priceless beyond measure.

Sadly, liberty seems to be one of those things. We assume liberty as a ‘right’ rather than a hard-won ‘privilege.’ We view liberty as something ‘owed’ to us as some sort of entitlement, verses being a precious ‘gift’ handed to us at a cost beyond our comprehension. And so if we are to truly understand what liberty is, and if we are to authentically embrace it maybe we need to step back, brazenly eliminate our selfish sense of entitlement and right, and ask “what is liberty?”
